A satisfactory foundation is an essential prerequisite for the durability of a Turfstone surface. There are no specific guidelines, however, because different ground and drainage conditions must be considered in each instance. Traffic requirements also play an important role.
Two major factors govern the installation of Turfstone: the bearing capacity of the existing subsoil; and the type of traffic to which it will be subjected.
Subsoil: Unsuitable subsoil should be excavated and the backfill compacted with a vibrating compactor.
Sub-base: Use 3" to 16" of 3/4" or 5/8" crusher run which should be compacted with a vibrating compactor. The amount of crushed material should be determined by the bearing capacity of the existing subsoil.
Levelling bed: Use a 2" layer of graded sand, levelled.
