Excavation:
Intended use determines the depth of your excavation: Base Preparation: In moist areas, use geotextile fabric to separate virgin soil from the base. Base material should consist of 3/4" stone with fines compacted in 4" lifts. The stone base should be leveled to the grade required. Edge Restraints: Easy to use, they're ideal for laying out the borders of your design. Lay edging directly on the stone base and secure with 12" landscape spikes. Use 1 spike every 2' for walkways and patios; every 1' for driveways and curved layouts. Setting Bed: Spread bedding sand atop the compacted base. For narrow areas such as walkways, you can use the edging as a guide with a notched 2 x 4. For screeding wider areas, lay parallel 1" diameter pipes. Paver Installation: Place pavers in the pattern of your choice. Select pavers vertically from multiple cubes for optimum color blending. String lines will help assure straight lines in your layout. Spacing between pavers should not exceed 1/8". Compaction and Sweeping: Spread sand over the top of the pavers and sweep it into all joints. Vibrating with a plate compactor will force sand between joints to further stabilize and level the surface. Sweep excess sand into joints.
